President’s Message

The California Organization of Methadone Providers (COMP) was incorporated as a not-for-profit (501c) corporation on May 31,1991. In 2002, COMP introduced new pharmacotherapy and other treatments, and became the California Opioid Maintenance Providers.

Today, COMP represents most of the approximately 150 licensed Narcotic Treatment Programs (NTPs) in California, making it the largest and oldest organization of its kind in the country.

COMP has sponsored many legislative measures that have impacted non-physician ownership of NTPs, office based opioid treatment, and Drug MediCal Reimbursement Methodology. COMP has enjoyed a good working relationship with the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (DADP) for three decades, helping to communicate State Regulations that reflect clinical experience rather than politics or philosophy. As a member of the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD), COMP has influenced national legislation and policy.

We take pride in our accomplishments, but are never complacent. We continue to face challenges and prejudices that have existed since our inception. But we now have decades of medical and scientific data showing that opioid dependency is a medical disease, and should be treated as such. Methadone combined with counseling offers the most effective treatment available to combat opioid dependency.

We encourage you to become a part of COMP and carry it with us into the future as we continue to be vigilant and vocal advocates of humane treatment. COMP will be only as powerful as the commitment of its members. Many lives depend upon our willingness to meet the challenges NTPs and their patients face each day.
